TOTORO

After watching My Neighbor Totoro numerous times I really don't know how to go about the movie. I like it, but than there is some parts that I really just didn't care for. There was plenty of times I thought that the movie was going to go somewhere like any other kids movie, but I was wrong.
Therefore, I do think that the movie could have been a tad bit better, but than again it wouldn't catch the younger viewers attention. If the movie was more for people our age it wouldn't have gotten the good ratings it did. There are some minor things that really did bug me, for one when Mei was running around outside and found this "secret place",where it seemed like only she was able to go to it, and the dad didn't even know she was home until Satsuki came home from school.
Another thing that really bugged me was when they took a bath together as a family. I guess over there in Japan its perfectly fine for the parents to bathe together but here in the United States it isn't. The way I see it is if we let out children take a shower with us they are going to think its okay to shower with other family members, friends, siblings, and possibly strangers. When in reality it isn't appropriate. I honestly would not want my child to think its fine to shower with other people.
Another thing, I compared My Neighbor Totoro to Alice in Wonderland. Exactly how only Alice could see everything in wonderland and nobody really knew what was going on with her they thought she was making it up. That's how Mei and Satsuki's dad was. When they tried to tell him about Totoro he didn't believe them and pretty much was like if Mei was happy he was happy. He really didn't care, and didn't want to crush Mei's imagination. Satsuki and Mei thought Totoro and the catbus were real exactly how Alice thought that the disappearing cat and the queen of hearts were real when only they could see them like that world was only made for them to see and the adults not to believe them.
Altogether I thought My Neighbor Totoro is a great movie to watch, but it has its strong and weak points. It pretty much isn't like any other Disney movie or kids movie at that. Its different and you can't really compare it to other movies since those have villians.
